The Pacific Games is a major continental multi-sport event held every four years.

It brings together athletes from many different nations across Oceania. The primary goal of the Pacific Games Council (PGC) is to build bonds of friendship and brotherhood. This is done through sporting exchange without distinction regarding race, religion, or politics. Athletes with a disability participate as full members of their national teams. This ensures the spirit of inclusion is part of the competition. Participants compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals based on their ranking.

Organizing the Games involves a complex sequence of planning and management. The PGC oversees the preparations for the host city to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Because hosting can be very expensive, the PGC also introduced the Pacific Mini Games. This is a scaled-down version of the event. It allows smaller nations or territories to host and participate more easily. The organization must also manage the sports program to keep costs under control. For example, the council recently decided to cap the program at 24 sports. This decision helps manage the logistical and financial demands placed on the host.

The sports included in the Games are divided into two main categories. Core sports are mandatory and must be included in every edition of the Games. Examples of core sports include athletics, basketball, swimming, and archery. Other sports are classified as optional. These are included at the discretion of the host nation's organizing committee. A host might choose to include sports like cricket or field hockey. Some sports have even changed over time, such as rugby union 15s being replaced by rugby sevens. Others, like underwater fishing, were discontinued after 1999.

The history of the Games is tied to the political changes in the Pacific.

Dr. A.H. Sahu Khan first proposed the idea in 1959. He was a Fiji representative at a South Pacific Commission meeting in Rabaul. In 1961, nine territories met in Nouméa to support the concept. Fiji hosted the inaugural Games in 1963. At that time, many nations were still under British or French administration. This meant British and French flags were often used during ceremonies. As islands gained independence, they began using their own national symbols. The event was originally known as the South Pacific Games until 2007.

Hosting the Games carries significant responsibility and can impact a nation's economy. The 2007 Games in Samoa left the country with a debt of US$92 million. This was due to heavy spending on infrastructure like roads and bridges. Some hosting costs have been reported to exceed 1 billion AUD. Despite these financial challenges, many nations continue to bid for the event. Ten cities in seven countries and territories have hosted the Games so far. Four countries have hosted three times: Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, and Samoa. French Polynesia will also join them as a third-time host in 2027.

Success in the Games is often measured by the medal table. New Caledonia currently leads the all-time medal count for the Pacific Games. They have topped the medal table on 14 separate occasions. Papua New Guinea has topped the table twice, and Fiji has done so once. Some nations show incredible consistency in their participation. Fiji, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, and Vanuatu have attended every single edition. The Solomon Islands joined the list of hosts for the first time in 2023.

The Games also reflect the cultural and religious landscape of Oceania.

Scheduling can sometimes lead to debate, such as holding events on Sundays. This is sensitive in nations like Tonga, where the Christian Sabbath is strictly observed. Cultural expectations have also influenced sports, such as changing the uniform for women's beach volleyball. Political events have also played a role in the competition. In 1995, several countries boycotted the Games in Tahiti to protest French nuclear testing. Despite these challenges, the Games remain a vital way to connect the Pacific region.
