The Pan American Games, often called the Pan Am Games, are a major multi-sport event for the Americas.

Held every four years, these games typically occur the year before the Summer Olympics. They represent the second-oldest continental games in the world. Thousands of athletes travel from across the Americas to compete in various summer sports. These competitors strive to earn gold, silver, or bronze medals in their respective events. The games serve as a massive celebration of athletic skill and regional unity.

Managing this massive event requires a complex organizational structure. The Pan American Sports Organization, or PASO, acts as the primary governing body. PASO is responsible for selecting host cities and deciding which sports will be included in the program. The Pan American Games Movement is composed of three essential parts. First, International Federations (IFs) supervise specific sports at an international level. For example, FIFA governs football, while the FIVB governs volleyball. Second, National Olympic Committees (NOCs) represent and regulate the movement within each individual country. There are currently 41 recognized NOCs. Third, Organizing Committees for the Pan American Games (PAOGs) are temporary groups. They manage a specific celebration and dissolve once their final report is delivered to PASO.

During the games, most participants live in a specialized location called the Pan American Games village. This village is designed to be a self-contained home for all athletes and officials. It provides essential services such as cafeterias for meals and health clinics for medical care. The village even includes specific locations for religious expression. This setup ensures that the thousands of competitors have a stable environment to rest and prepare. The scale of these games is immense, often involving over 5,000 athletes competing in 36 different sports and nearly 400 events.

The history of the games traces back to the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. During that time, Latin American representatives of the International Olympic Committee suggested a competition for all American nations. A limited sports program was later staged at the 1937 Pan-American Exposition in Dallas. This program included athletics, boxing, and wrestling. While the first official games were planned for 1942 in Buenos Aires, World War II forced a postponement. The inaugural Pan American Games finally took place in Buenos Aires in 1951.

While the games focus on summer sports, there has been one attempt at a winter version. The only Winter Pan American Games were held in 1990 at Las Leñas, Argentina. Planning winter games is difficult because the Americas span both hemispheres, creating scheduling issues with reverse seasons. The 1990 event faced significant challenges due to unseasonably warm weather and a lack of snow. Only 97 athletes from eight countries participated. Because of the weather, organizers could only stage three Alpine Skiing events: the Slalom, Giant Slalom, and Super G. The United States and Canada won all 18 medals awarded during those games.

The games use several important symbols to represent their ideals. The Pan American Games flag features the PASO logo on a white background. In 1988, the Olympic Rings were added to the flag to show the connection to the Olympic Movement. The Pan American Games torch is also a central symbol. In many instances, the flame is lit during a simulation of the Aztec new fire ceremony in Mexico. An Aztec elder lights the torch of the first relay bearer to begin the torch relay. This flame is then carried to the main stadium for the opening ceremony. Additionally, each host city introduces a mascot to represent its cultural heritage. In 2023, the mascot for the Santiago games was a bird named Fiu.

The games also allow for unique participation rules regarding political sovereignty. PASO permits nations that do not meet strict sovereignty requirements to compete. This means colonies and dependencies can form their own National Olympic Committees. For example, territories like Puerto Rico and Bermuda compete as separate nations. There are also specific versions of the games for younger athletes. In 2021, the first Junior Pan American Games were held for athletes under 21 years of age. This newer event follows the model of the Youth Olympic Games and requires less expensive infrastructure.
