Athletes from many islands travel to compete against each other. These games aim to create bonds of friendship and brotherhood. The organizers want to bring people together through sport. They do this without looking at race, religion, or politics. Athletes with a disability are also full members of their national teams. This means everyone can join the fun and show their skill.

In every event, winners receive special prizes called medals. Gold medals go to the person in first place. Silver medals go to the second place winner. Bronze medals are given to the third place finisher.

Organizing these games is a big job for the Pacific Games Council.

They oversee how the host city prepares for the visitors. Sometimes, the games are very expensive for the host nation. For example, hosting in Samoa in 2007 led to a large debt. This happened because the country spent much money on roads and bridges. To help smaller nations, a smaller version called the Pacific Mini Games was made. This allows more places to participate in the spirit of sport. The council also works to keep the sports program balanced. They recently decided to limit the number of sports to 24. This helps manage the high costs of the event.

History shows how much the region has changed over time.

Dr. A.H. Sahu Khan first proposed the idea in 1959. He was a representative from Fiji at a meeting in Rabaul. In 1961, nine territories met in Nouméa to support the plan. Fiji was chosen to host the very first games in 1963. Back then, many islands were still ruled by Britain or France. Because of this, people used different flags and anthems during ceremonies. As islands gained independence, they started using their own unique symbols. The games were originally called the South Pacific Games. They officially changed their name to the Pacific Games in 2007.

Many different places have hosted these games across the years.

Ten cities in seven countries and territories have hosted so far. Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, and Samoa have each hosted three times. French Polynesia will also host for a third time in 2027. The Solomon Islands hosted the games for the first time in 2023. Some nations are very consistent in attending every single event. These include Fiji, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, and Vanuatu. New Caledonia has won the most medals in total. They have topped the medal table on 14 separate occasions.

There are many sports to watch during the competition.

Some are called core sports because they must be included every time. These include athletics, basketball, swimming, and even archery. Other sports are optional for the host nation to choose. A host might pick sports like cricket or field hockey. Some sports have even changed over the years. For instance, rugby union 15s was replaced by rugby sevens. Underwater fishing was also a sport but it was discontinued in 1999. The games continue to grow and adapt to the needs of the Pacific people.
