These games were special because they featured 203 different events. This was the highest number of events ever held at an Olympics until that time. Athletes competed for gold, silver, and bronze medals in many sports. The games were a way for the world to show great skill and talent.

However, these games were also marked by a very large boycott. A boycott is when a group of countries chooses not to participate in an event. Led by the United States, 66 nations decided not to come to Moscow. This happened because of the Soviet–Afghan War that began in 1979.

Because of this, only 80 nations were represented at the games. This was the smallest number of participating nations since 1956. Some athletes still wanted to compete despite the protests. They marched in the opening ceremony under the Olympic Flag instead of their own national flags.

Choosing a host city is a big decision for the International Olympic Committee. In 1974, leaders met in Vienna, Austria, to pick a city.

Only two cities were bidding to host: Moscow and Los Angeles. Moscow won the vote with 39 votes, while Los Angeles received 20. This decision meant Moscow would host the 1980 games. Los Angeles would later host the Summer Olympics in 1984.

For example, the runner Miruts Yifter won two gold medals in the 5,000 and 10,000 metre races. In archery, Tomi Poikolainen won gold by just three points. The Soviet Union and East Germany were very successful. They won 127 of the 203 gold medals available.

Preparing for such a huge event costs a lot of money. The official report said the cost to host was about 1.35 billion U.S. dollars.

Later studies estimated the total cost was much higher. It was about 6.3 billion dollars when measured in 2015 values. To help pay for everything, the organizers held Olympic lotteries. These lotteries covered about 25 percent of the total costs. The games were a huge way to show off the city of Moscow to the whole world.
