He was born in Ukraine on September 16, 1937. He later competed for the Soviet Union. The international governing body for wrestling, FILA, called him one of the greatest wrestlers in history. His physical presence was very impressive. He stood 190 cm tall. He weighed more than 100 kg. His last name actually means "bear" in Russian. This name fit his large and powerful build perfectly.

Medved's competitive career was defined by incredible success. Between 1962 and 1972, he won three Olympic gold medals. He also earned seven world titles and three European titles. One of the most famous parts of his career was a rivalry. He competed against Osman Duraliev from 1967 to 1972. Duraliev was a wrestler from Turkey and Bulgaria. These two athletes met eight times in major international championship finals. Medved won every single one of those eight matches. However, not every match was easy for him. In 1971, he faced a very difficult match in Sofia. Duraliev led the score 4:3 with only 43 seconds remaining. Medved managed to equalize the score. He won the title because of his lower body weight.

Medved was also a significant figure in Olympic ceremonies. In 1972, he served as the Olympic flag bearer for the Soviet Union. He held this high honor again in 2004 for Belarus. He also had a special role at the 1980 Olympics. During the Opening Ceremony, he recited the Judge's Oath. This role shows the deep respect the Olympic movement had for him. He was a leader both on the mat and in official capacities.

After he retired from active competition in 1972, Medved transitioned to leadership. He moved to Belarus, where he had previously served in the Soviet Army. He became a national coach to help train new athletes. He also lectured at the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics. Later, he held important administrative roles. He was the vice-president of the Belarus Olympic Committee. He also served as vice-president of the Belarus Wrestling Federation. He used his experience to grow the sport in his home country.

His many achievements earned him numerous prestigious awards. He received the Order of Lenin in 1964. He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in 1970. He received the Order of the Badge of Honour several times, specifically in 1964, 1969, and 1985. In 2001, he was named the best Belarusian athlete of the 20th century. In 2003, he became one of the first 10 inductees into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame. These honors reflect his massive impact on sports history.

Medved's legacy continues through his family and his community. His daughter, Yelena, became a Belarusian tennis champion. His son, Aleksei, won a junior world title in wrestling in 1987. In the city of Minsk, his name is still celebrated. An annual wrestling tournament is held there in his honor. This tournament has taken place since the 1970s. Medved passed away in Minsk on September 2, 2024, at the age of 86. He remains a symbol of excellence in the world of wrestling.
