Most of this time was shaped by World War II. This massive war affected people in Europe, Africa, and Asia. It changed how countries lived and worked together. The decade saw the world population grow from 2.25 billion to 2.5 billion people. This growth happened even though there were 600 million deaths during this time.

World War II brought many hard and sad events. Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, caused great harm to many people. They carried out the Holocaust, which was the systematic killing of six million Jewish people. Millions of others were also killed during this time.

Leaders met at the Yalta Conference in early 1945 to discuss this. They included Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin. They wanted to help rebuild the nations that were hurt by war. New groups like the United Nations were formed to help countries talk. The Bretton Woods system was also created to help the global economy. This system helped the economy grow well into the 1970s.

Many lands also gained their independence during these years. This process is called decolonization.
