Seeing products on screen led to mass consumerism. This means people bought many new things for their houses. While Americans used TV often, it took longer in other countries. Science also made a huge leap with medicine. Doctors found a polio vaccine in the mid-1950s. This helped the number of deaths from the disease decline rapidly.

Politics were often tense because of the Cold War. This was a heated competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. The two sides disagreed on ideas like capitalism and communism.

There was also an arms race involving nuclear weapons. Countries tested weapons like the RDS-37 and Upshot–Knothole. These tensions made the political climate feel very conservative.

Many parts of the world were also changing their governments. This process is called decolonization. Many nations in Africa and Asia fought for independence.
