The 1940s was a decade of massive global transformation. It began on January 1, 1940, and ended on December 31, 1949.

This period was defined by the massive scale of World War II. Most of the decade's first half was consumed by this conflict. The war impacted people across Europe, Africa, and Asia. It fundamentally altered how nations interacted and organized their societies. Even the global population changed significantly during these ten years. The world population rose from 2.25 billion to 2.5 billion people. This growth occurred despite 600 million deaths during the decade.

World War II involved complex military campaigns and devastating human costs. In North Africa, the Allied powers liberated Libya in early 1943. This followed a long campaign in the Western Desert near Egypt. In Europe, the war saw intense aerial combat, such as the Battle of Britain. The United States entered the war after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

The conflict included the Holocaust, a program of systematic state-sponsored extermination. Nazi Germany, under Adolf Hitler, murdered approximately six million European Jews. Many other groups, including Romani and Soviet civilians, were also targeted. Some estimates suggest total Holocaust victims reached between 11 million and 17 million people. Resistance movements also fought back, such as the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943.

As the war ended, the global political structure began to shift. The German instrument of surrender was signed in May 1945. Japan surrendered in August 1945 after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

To plan for the future, leaders met at the Yalta Conference in early 1945. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Premier Joseph Stalin discussed postwar reorganization. This meeting aimed to re-establish nations torn apart by war. Following the war, the world entered a period of intense tension. This period is known as the Cold War. It involved a division between the US-led Western world and the Soviet-led Eastern world. This rivalry lasted for 46 years, ending in December 1991.

New international institutions were created to manage these global tensions. The United Nations was established through its Charter in 1945. This organization aimed to facilitate cooperation between nations. To stabilize the global economy, leaders created the Bretton Woods system.

In July 1944, delegates from 44 Allied nations met in New Hampshire. This conference established the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). These institutions helped facilitate a period of economic expansion that lasted until the 1970s. Additionally, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed in April 1949. These systems were designed to provide stability in a rapidly changing world.

The decade also saw a major movement called decolonization. This was the process where many colonies gained independence from European powers. The defeat of totalitarian organizations like Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan accelerated this. For example, Japan had previously annexed Korea and Manchuria. After the war, many new states emerged. India and Pakistan were partitioned into two separate nations in 1947. This partition led to the deaths of millions of people. In 1945, Indonesia declared independence from the Netherlands. The Philippines also gained independence from the United States in 1945.

In 1948, the state of Israel was established following the end of the British Mandate of Palestine.

In Southeast Asia, independence movements faced long struggles. Vietnam declared independence in 1945 under Hồ Chí Minh and the Việt Minh. This led to a long conflict against French colonial rule. In the Belgian Congo, a Western-educated elite and anti-colonial pressure grew. This eventually led to a rapid independence from Belgium in 1960. In Singapore, the British reclaimed control in 1945. However, their prestige was damaged by their earlier surrender in 1942. These shifts in power meant that the map of the world was being redrawn constantly. New governments were rising to replace old colonial systems.

Technological progress moved forward alongside these political shifts. Many new technologies were developed in tandem with the war effort. Scientists and engineers worked on jet propulsion to improve aircraft. They also made early advancements in nuclear power and computers. These innovations were later adapted and improved during the postwar era. This era of scientific discovery helped build the foundation for modern life. The 1940s acted as a bridge between the old world and the new. It was a decade where the seeds of the modern technological and political age were sown.
