It began on January 1, 1930, and ended on December 31, 1939. This era was defined by a deep economic and political crisis. This crisis eventually led to the start of World War II. Many nations faced extreme instability during these years. The decade changed how governments and people lived together.

The economic downfall began with the Wall Street crash of 1929. This was the largest stock market crash in American history. It triggered the Great Depression, a period of severe global poverty. Unemployment and scarcity became common in many major nations. The United States and Germany suffered particularly hard. In the United States, the Dust Bowl worsened the struggle.

Political shifts in Europe created intense conflict and suffering. In 1933, Adolf Hitler and the NSDAP rose to power in Germany. The Nazi government became a totalitarian dictatorship. They passed laws that discriminated against Jews and other ethnic minorities.
