The 1920s was a transformative decade that lasted from January 1, 1920, to December 31, 1929. This era is often defined by an economic boom in the Western World following World War I. Because of this prosperity, many people call it the "Roaring Twenties" or the "Jazz Age" in America and Western Europe.

In Germany, the period was known as the "Golden Twenties." French speakers used the term "Années folles," meaning "crazy years," to describe the cultural dynamism. This decade saw massive shifts in technology, politics, and social norms. It was a period where the modern world began to take its current shape.

Technological growth changed how people lived and interacted with their surroundings. The large-scale adoption of automobiles, telephones, and radios became common in urban areas.

Household electricity also began to reach more homes, fueling consumer demand. Motion pictures became a massive industry, with silent films being especially popular.

Some of the highest-grossing films included the epic "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" and the war drama "The Big Parade."

This era also saw the rise of celebrity culture, focusing on movie stars and sports heroes. In the United States, baseball became a major sport, led by famous players like Babe Ruth.

Socially, the 1920s were marked by significant changes in gender roles and fashion. First-wave feminism saw major political victories for women's suffrage. Women gained the right to vote in the United States in 1920 and in Albania in 1920.

Ireland granted suffrage in 1921, and Britain expanded it to all women over 21 by 1928. In cities, a new type of woman known as a "flapper" emerged. These women often wore knee-length skirts and sported bobbed hair with finger waves.

While some scholars suggest suffrage was a reward for women's wartime roles, others note that many countries, like Italy, did not grant these rights.

Political landscapes shifted drastically as new ideologies and leaders rose to power. In Italy, Benito Mussolini seized power in 1922, creating the world's first fascist government.

He established a totalitarian state and pursued an aggressive foreign policy. Other leaders, such as Józef Piłsudski in Poland, also emerged during this time. In the Soviet Union, the Bolsheviks created the New Economic Policy in 1921. This was later replaced by the first five-year plan in 1928.

The decade also saw the rise of radical movements and various civil wars across the globe.

Conflict and instability were present alongside the economic growth. The Turkish War of Independence led to the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. This treaty was more favorable to Turkey than the previous Treaty of Sèvres. In China, a civil war erupted in 1927 between the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party.

Many other nations experienced internal strife, including Paraguay, Ireland, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Afghanistan. Even the United States faced unique challenges, such as Prohibition. This law banned alcohol and led to organized crime and smuggling by figures like Al Capone.

Humanity also faced immense suffering from natural disasters and disease. The Spanish flu pandemic and the Russian typhus epidemic caused millions of deaths.

Severe famines also struck the world, including a Russian famine from 1921 to 1922 that killed 5 million people. A later famine in China between 1928 and 1930 resulted in 6 million deaths. Natural disasters like the 1920 Haiyuan earthquake and the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake caused massive loss of life. During this decade, the global population grew from 1.87 billion to 2.05 billion people. This growth included approximately 700 million births and 525 million deaths.

All of this change came to a sudden halt at the end of the decade. In October 1929, the Wall Street crash occurred in North America.
