arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Mao Dun wrote a famous book in 1933. It is called Ziye. People call it Midnight in English. This book tells a story about life in Shanghai. It shows what the city was like back then.

Shanghai was a very busy and new place. It had bright neon signs. One sign said, "Light, Heat, Power!" The city had electric lights and fast cars. The book mentions three Citroen cars from 1930. People wore fancy flannel suits. The city was changing fast because of new ways of business.

But not everyone liked these changes. The main character has a father. He comes from the quiet countryside. He is part of the landed gentry, or wealthy land owners. This new city life frightens him.

Mao Dun used many special details. He used words from English. He even used lines from plays by Shakespeare. He also used names from a book called Ivanhoe. The book shows a world that is moving very quickly. It is a look at a city in flux.
