He loved books from a very young age. When he was only one year old, he took part in a tradition called zhuazhou. This is a ceremony where a baby grabs an object. Qian grabbed a book. Because of this, his uncle gave him a new name. It meant "fond of books."

Qian was a master of many languages. He was very good at Chinese and English. He also knew Latin, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. This helped him connect ideas from many different cultures. He studied at Tsinghua University. He also studied at the University of Oxford in England.

He wrote many important books. His most famous novel is called Fortress Besieged. This book became a best-seller. He also wrote a large work called Limited Views. This was a five-volume set of essays and notes. He wrote it using classical Chinese. This was a special, older way of writing.

Qian lived through many hard times in China. Even when life was difficult, he kept studying. He helped bring ancient and modern ideas together. He wanted to show how they light each other up.
