This building was part of a large temple complex. This complex was a center for the city. It was a shrine for the moon god named Nanna. Nanna was the patron deity of Ur. The ziggurat was a solid mass of mud brick. The outside was faced with burnt bricks. These bricks were held together with a dark material called bitumen.

King Ur-Nammu started the building in the 21st century BC. This was during the Third Dynasty of Ur. He built it to honor the moon god. King Shulgi finished the work later. Shulgi ruled for 48 years. During his reign, Ur became a capital city. It controlled much of Mesopotamia.

Time passed and the building became ruins. By the 6th century BC, it was in bad shape. King Nabonidus was the last king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. He found very little left of the monument. He restored the building in seven stages.

Many people studied the site in later years. William Loftus found the ruins in 1850. Sir Leonard Woolley led big excavations from 1922 to 1934. The site has faced hard times recently. It was damaged during the Gulf War in 1991. You can see over 400 bullet holes in the walls. Today, many tourists and pilgrims visit the site.
