A king named Ur-Nammu started the building. He lived a long time ago. He built it for a moon god named Nanna. The building was part of a large temple area. This area helped run the city. King Shulgi finished the work later. He ruled for 48 years.

Over many years, the tower fell apart. A king named Nabonidus fixed it in the 6th century BC. He worked on it in seven stages. In the 1850s, people found the ruins again. Later, a man named Sir Leonard Woolley led big studies of the site. He dug there from 1922 to 1934.

The tower is made of mud bricks. The outside has burnt bricks. These bricks stay together with a dark material called bitumen. The building has seen hard times. It was damaged during a war in 1991. You can still see many marks on the walls. Today, many people visit this special site.
