The Cyrus Cylinder is an old object made of baked clay.

It looks like a small barrel. It has tiny marks called cuneiform script on it. These marks tell a story about a Persian king named Cyrus the Great.

Cyrus became a ruler after he took over Babylon in 539 BC.

The writing on the clay says he was a good leader. It says the god Marduk chose him to bring peace. The text says Cyrus helped people return to their homes. He also fixed many old temples in the region. Some people think this shows he was kind to different groups of people.

An explorer named Hormuzd Rassam found the cylinder in 1879.

He found it in the ruins of the city of Babylon. The cylinder was broken into pieces for a long time. In 1972, experts joined the main part with a smaller piece. Now, the cylinder is kept in the British Museum.
