He was born in 1909 in a place now called Ukraine. His family moved to the United States when he was young. Harris wanted to find the math rules of speech. He did not want to guess how people think. Instead, he looked at how people actually use words.

He studied how words and sounds sit next to each other. He used special tests to see how people hear sounds. One test asked people to pick out small changes in speech. This helped him find the building blocks of language. He also helped start a big linguistics department at a college.

Harris worked on many big ideas for many years. He studied how language carries information. He also looked at how we learn to speak. His wife was a scientist who worked with Albert Einstein. Harris died in 1992 after a long life of work. His ideas still help us understand how we talk today.
