Joseph Greenberg was a man who studied how people speak. He was a famous linguist. A linguist is someone who studies language. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1915. Before he studied words, he loved music. He even gave a piano concert when he was 14!

Joseph wanted to find patterns in many languages. He used a way called mass comparison. This means he looked at many languages all at once. He did not just look at two languages. He looked at many to find big patterns. This helped him group languages into large families.

He grouped hundreds of African languages into four families. He called them Afroasiatic, Nilo-Saharan, Niger–Congo, and Khoisan. He also looked at languages in the Americas. He thought many of them belonged to one large group called Amerind. He even studied languages in New Guinea.

Not all experts agreed with him. Some thought his methods were not right. They felt his data had mistakes. Even so, his work changed how people think about language. He helped us look for the rules that all human languages share.
