Joseph was a man who loved words. He was a teacher who studied many ways to talk. He loved music and played the piano.

Joseph looked for patterns in how people speak. He wanted to see how languages are related. He looked at many languages at once.

He grouped many African languages into four big families. He also looked at languages in the Americas. He looked at languages in New Guinea too.

Some people did not agree with his ideas. They thought his ways of grouping were not right. They still talk about his work today.

Joseph helped us see how much we share. He showed how words can connect us all.
