It sits on the western side of the island of Mindanao. The land lies between two bodies of water. These are the Moro Gulf and the Sulu Sea. You can see many bays and islands along the coast.

A thin strip of land connects the peninsula to the rest of Mindanao. This strip sits between Panguil Bay and Pagadian Bay.

This region is made of several different parts. It includes the provinces of Sulu, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga Sibugay.

There are also two important cities named Isabela and Zamboanga. Pagadian serves as the regional center for government work. Meanwhile, Zamboanga City is the main center for trade and industry. The region is home to many small towns called municipalities. There are also 2,314 smaller areas called barangays.

Many different groups of people have lived here for a long time. In the ancient era, the Subanen people were the largest group. Later, the Tausūg people moved to the area from northeastern Mindanao. They became a very strong group in the 14th and 15th centuries. Many people in the region also follow the religion of Islam. Other groups, like the Yakan and the Sama-Bajau, also live here. Some people, like the Subanen, kept their own traditional beliefs.

History changed many times in this part of the world. In the 1500s, the Spanish arrived and built a strong base. They chose a place called La Caldera for their settlement. This area saw many battles between Spanish soldiers and local Moro groups. Later, the United States took control of the area in 1898. During the Second World War, the Empire of Japan occupied the peninsula. American and Philippine forces helped to free the land in 1945.

Today, the region is known for its unique cities and places. Zamboanga del Norte is home to the city of Dipolog. This city is often called the Orchid City because of its many flowers.

Another city, Dapitan, is known as the Shrine City. This is where the national hero, José Rizal, lived in exile. The peninsula has many different seals for its provinces.
