Zadie Smith is a famous English writer who creates many kinds of stories. She writes long novels, short stories, and essays about many topics. Her work often looks at big ideas like race and identity. She became a very well-known name after her first book became a huge success. Now, she is a professor at New York University. She teaches creative writing to help other people become writers too.

Smith's journey into writing began while she was a student at King's College, Cambridge. She studied English literature and wrote short stories for a student collection. A publisher saw her work and offered her a contract for a novel. She finished her first book, White Teeth, during her final year at university. This book was published in 2000 and became an immediate best-seller. It won several important awards, like the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.

Her life in London helped shape the things she writes about. She was born in Willesden in 1975 to a Jamaican mother and an English father. As a young girl, she loved tap dancing very much. This early love for dance inspired her fifth novel, Swing Time. She also wrote a play called The Wife of Willesden. This play was written for a culture festival in her home area of Brent.

Smith has written many other successful books over the years. Her novel On Beauty was published in 2005 and won the Orange Prize for Fiction. In 2012, she published NW, which is set in north-west London. She also wrote a book called The Fraud, which came out in 2023. This historical novel is set between the 1830s and the 1870s. It tells a story involving a man named Andrew Bogle.

Writing is a way for Smith to explore how the world works. She believes fiction should use both the head and the heart. She even shared her own rules for writing with a newspaper. One of her rules is to always tell the truth. She also uses her writing to help others through charity. In 2020, she donated money from her book sales to emergency relief funds.
