Yuriy Sedykh was a famous athlete who mastered the hammer throw. This sport involves throwing a heavy metal ball attached to a wire. Sedykh represented the Soviet Union for many years from 1976 to 1991. He was a champion at many big events. He won gold medals at the 1976 and 1980 Summer Olympics. He also won at the 1991 World Championships.

His way of throwing was very special and different. Most hammer throwers spin four times before they let go. Sedykh used only three rotations to build his power. He would push the heavy ball to the left. Then, he let the hammer pull him around. He also practiced using hammers that were lighter or heavier than normal. This helped him perfect his unique movement.

Sedykh grew up in a place called Nikopol in Ukraine. He began his track and field journey in 1967. His first coach was named Vladimir Ivanovich Volovik. Later, he worked with Anatoliy Bondarchuk. Many people believe Bondarchuk is one of the best coaches in the world. Sedykh even reached the rank of major in the Soviet Army.

In 1986, Sedykh did something truly incredible in Stuttgart. He set a new world record during the European championships. He threw the hammer a distance of 86.74 meters. This record is very famous because it has lasted for a long time. Only one other person, Sergey Litvinov, has thrown over 86 meters. There were questions about his performance during that era. Sedykh denied claims that he used banned substances called steroids.

Sports ran deep in his family life. His first wife, Lyudmila Kondratyeva, won an Olympic gold medal in the 100 m sprint. His second wife, Natalya Lisovskaya, was a world-record holder in the shot put. Their daughter, Alexia, also won gold at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. Later, Sedykh moved to Paris, France. There, he taught people about strength and conditioning. He died in France in 2021 at the age of 66.
