In this sport, athletes run fast and use a long pole to swing themselves over a high bar. Bubka was a master of this difficult task. He broke the world record 35 times during his career. This included 17 outdoor records and 18 indoor records. He was the very first person to clear 6.0 meters. He was also the first to jump over 6.10 meters.

Bubka used a special way to jump called the Petrov/Bubka model. Most vaulters try to bend the pole as hard as they can. This model is different because it focuses on driving the pole upward. It uses high running speed to help the athlete. The vaulter keeps putting energy into the pole while they rise. Bubka also gripped the pole higher than most other people. This gave him extra leverage to reach new heights.

His journey into sports stardom began in the early 1980s. He was born in Luhansk in 1963. Before he was a champion, he tried sprinting and the long jump. He entered the world stage at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. There, he won a gold medal by clearing 5.70 meters. He soon began a long period of winning. He won six World Championships in a row from 1983 to 1997.

Bubka's career saw many big changes and famous moments. He first competed for the Soviet Union starting in 1981. After that system ended in 1991, he represented Ukraine. In 1988, he won his only Olympic gold medal in Seoul. He also signed a contract with Nike in 1992. This deal gave him $40,000 for every world record he broke. His family was also very athletic. His brother Vasiliy won medals in pole vault, and his son Sergei played professional tennis.

He also led the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine for many years. Even after retiring from jumping in 2001, he stayed active in leadership. He remains a proud symbol of his home country, Ukraine.
