This amazing height is still the best in history.

Sotomayor had a very special way of moving. He used a unique, galloping approach to build speed. He took 14 steps toward the bar. During his run, he used two long, exaggerated strides in the middle. Then, he used a powerful left leg to take off. He also pumped both of his arms to help him jump. This specific way of moving helped him reach such great heights.

His journey started in a surprising way. He was born in Limonar, Cuba, in 1967. Because he was very tall, a sports school first chose him for basketball. However, coaches changed his sport to high jump when he was 14. By the time he was 19, he was ranked number five in the world. He worked hard to become a champion on the global stage.

Sotomayor won many important prizes throughout his career. He won a gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He also won a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. At the World Indoor Championships, he won four gold medals between 1989 and 1999. He also earned two gold medals at the IAAF World Championships. These medals show how much he dominated the sport for many years.

High jumping is a sport of great skill and focus. Sotomayor even passed his talent down to his family. His son, Javier Sotomayor García, also competes in the high jump. This shows how much the sport can mean to a family. Even though he retired in 2001, people still remember his record-breaking leaps. He remains a legendary figure in the world of track and field.
