The city was formed in 1998. This happened when Old Yeosu City, Yeocheon City, and Yeocheon County merged together. It is a busy place where the land meets the sea.

Very long ago, people lived in this area during the Neolithic period. They built homes by pressing clay over layers of shells. These homes were circular and flat. They even had round kilns for making things.

Archaeologists found many stone tools at these sites. These tools included axes, sickles, and grinding stones. They also made many kinds of pottery. These items show how people lived thousands of years ago.

The history of the name Yeosu is quite old. The name first appeared during the Goryeo dynasty. Before that, the area was called Wonzon-hyeon during the Baekje period. Later, the region was part of the Sapyeong-gun area. In the 5th century, the Baekje kingdom ruled here. They used mountain fortresses like Woram and Temi to manage the land. Eventually, the Silla kingdom took control of the region.

Yeosu has always been an important place for the sea. In 1479, the Joseon Dynasty built a naval headquarters there. This was the headquarters for the eastern sector of Jeolla Province.

Because of this, the area became a very important naval base. Over many centuries, the government changed how they ruled the land. They moved from small counties to larger provinces. This helped them manage the many islands and coastal areas.
