Yeosu is a significant coastal city in South Korea. It is located on the southern shore of the country. This city is the second largest in South Jeolla Province. Currently, the city has a population of 268,823 people. The modern city was formed in 1998 through a merger. This merger combined Old Yeosu City, Yeocheon City, and Yeocheon County. Today, it serves as a vital link between the land and the sea.
Archaeological evidence shows that people lived here during the Neolithic period. Researchers from the National Gwangju Museum investigated these sites between 1989 and 1990. They found many types of pottery, such as Yunggimong and Mummun. They also discovered various stone tools. These included milgae, which are hammerstones, and jargegae, which are sickles. Other tools included axes, sickles, and grinding stones. These items show how early inhabitants used materials for daily life.
The residential sites from this era were very unique. People built homes by compacting clay over layers of shells. These structures were circular and flat in layout. They even contained round kilns for heating or making objects. At one site, researchers found a specific set of tools. This included a moru-dol, which is a grindstone, and a galpan, or grinding plate. These tools allowed people to crush materials into powder. Radiocarbon dating of the Songdo shell mound placed these sites around 4285 B.C.
Yeosu has a complex political history involving many ancient kingdoms. During the Proto Three Kingdoms Period, a group called Wonji-guk existed here. This was one of the Mahan confederations. Later, the Baekje kingdom expanded its power into the region. Baekje did not always rule directly through governors. Instead, they often used indirect control by collecting tributes from local chieftains. In the 5th century, the region became part of Sapyeong-gun. This area included three specific counties: Wonzon, Maro, and Dolsan.
The Baekje era left behind many physical defenses. These include several mountain fortresses used for protection. Notable examples are the Woram Mountain Fortress and the Temi Mountain Fortress. Other fortresses include Jasan, Gorak, and the Jukpo-ri Bon Mountain Fortress. After the fall of Baekje in 660, the Silla kingdom took control. Silla reorganized the land into a system of nine provinces. This system helped the central government manage distant territories more effectively.
The name "Yeosu" has its own historical evolution. The name first appeared in the Samguk Sagi Jiriji records. It was known as Wonzon-hyeon during the Baekje period. During the Goryeo dynasty, the name Yeosu-hyeon was officially used. In 940, the administrative divisions changed again. The region was divided into Yeosu-hyeon and Dolsan-hyeon. Both areas were under the jurisdiction of Seungpyeong-gun. This administrative structure continued until the late Goryeo period.
Maritime importance became a defining feature of the region. In 1479, the Joseon Dynasty established a naval headquarters here. This was the Jwasuyoung, or the Naval Headquarters for the eastern sector of Jeolla Province.

Modern Yeosu offers many attractions for travelers. You can ride the Yeosu Maritime Cable Car to see the ocean from above.
