Many different kinds of work happen in Pohang. The city is famous for making metal and steel. It is home to POSCO, which is one of the largest steel makers on Earth. This company started making steel in 1972.

Today, the city also works on materials for electric vehicle batteries. This includes things like cathode materials. Besides metal, people also work in shipbuilding and fishing. The city is also a place for food and textiles. Some people grow grapes, persimmons, and garlic chives on nearby farms.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. The earliest signs of people come from the Mumun Pottery Period. This was between 1500 and 300 BC. Archaeologists found small villages and large stone burials called dolmens there. At the start of the 1900s, Pohang was just a small fishing village. Things began to change in 1930 with a new harbour. The city grew quickly after that. It became a town in 1931 and a city in 1949. During the Korean War, the city's roads and port were very important. In July 1950, UN forces landed there in a large operation.

There are many interesting places to see in Pohang. You can visit the Jukdo Fish Market to see fresh seafood. People also love to go to Yeongildae Beach. Many people visit that beach in the summer to watch fireworks.

The geography of Pohang is shaped by its coastal location and unique geology. The city lies within the Pohang Basin. This area contains Neogene sedimentary rocks. These rocks are very important to South Korean geology. They hold diverse fossil records that scientists study. The climate is classified as humid subtropical. This means the weather stays relatively mild. In January, the mean temperature is 2.2 °C. In August, the mean temperature rises to 26.0 °C. The city receives about 1,152 mm of precipitation every year. August is the wettest month with 227.4 mm of rain. December is the driest month with only 25.7 mm.

Pohang's economy relies on several distinct industrial sectors. The most famous is the heavy industry sector. This includes iron, steel, and shipbuilding. These were Toehwa-hyeon, Jidap-hyeon, Geunoji-hyeon, and Haea-hyeon. During the Goryeo Dynasty, these names changed to Heunghae-gun, Janggi-hyeon, Yeongil-hyeon, and Cheongha-hyeon. In 1914, the counties were unified as Yeongil-gun. The city grew through many mergers and reclassifications. In 1995, the united Pohang absorbed all of Yeongil-gun. Today, the city is organized into two main districts. These are Nam-gu and Buk-gu. The city is managed by a mayor and various specialized bureaus.

Visitors can find many cultural and natural attractions in Pohang. The Jukdo Fish Market is a popular place to buy fresh seafood. For beaches, people visit Yeongildae, Wolpo, and Pohang Songdo.
