As the water flows, the land changes. At first, it is a cold desert. Later, it becomes a green forest. The river also makes a huge canyon. This is the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. It is the deepest canyon in the world. The river has three big waterfalls. One is called the "Hidden Falls." Some people use the river for kayaking. The water can be very rough. This makes it hard to travel. Many people live in the river basin. This is because the weather is not too harsh there. The river is bounded by the Himalayas to the south. To the north are the Kang Rinpoche and Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains. China is now building a very large dam on the river. This will make power from the water.

The river is known as the highest major river in the world. It is a very important part of the land it flows through.

Water travels a long way to form this river. It begins at the Angsi Glacier in western Tibet. This glacier is southeast of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. The river flows through the South Tibet Valley as it moves.

As the water moves, the land around it changes. It starts in a cold desert and moves into dry steppe. Later, the land becomes a forest filled with rhododendron trees. The river also has many tributaries, such as the Nyang River and the Lhasa River.

History tells us many stories about this river. For a long time, people told stories of great waterfalls. Westerners did not see the "Hidden Falls" until 1998. Some called this a new discovery. However, Chinese geographers had already seen them from a helicopter in 1987. Since the 1990s, many teams have come to explore the water. They use kayaks to travel through the rough rapids. Some trips were very hard and even ended in tragedy. In 2002, an international group finally finished a trip through the upper gorge.

There are many amazing facts about this place. The river creates the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. This canyon is formed by a horse-shoe bend near Namcha Barwa. It is the deepest canyon in the world.

The river basin is a good place for people to live. This is because the climate is not as harsh as the high mountains nearby. The Himalayas sit to the south of the river. To the north are the Kang Rinpoche and Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains.

Today, humans are changing how we use the river. China is building the Medog Hydropower Station on the water. This will be the largest hydropower dam in the world. Construction on this huge project began on 19 July 2025. The project is expected to cost about 1 trillion yuan.

The river is known as the highest major river in the world.

The river begins at the Angsi Glacier in western Tibet. This glacier is located southeast of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. In its upper section, the river is called the Dangque Zangbu. This name means "Horse River." As the water flows, it forms the South Tibet Valley. The river is joined by several major tributaries. These include the Nyangchu River, the Lhasa River, the Nyang River, and the Parlung Tsangpo. The Nyang River is the longest tributary of the Yarlung Tsangpo.

As the river moves through the South Tibet Valley, the environment changes. The valley descends from high altitudes. This descent causes the surrounding vegetation to shift. It starts as a cold desert. Then it moves into an arid steppe. Eventually, the land becomes covered in deciduous scrub vegetation. Finally, it turns into conifer and rhododendron forest. The tree line is located at approximately 4,000 meters.

The geography of the river basin is very distinct. The basin is bounded by the Himalayas to the south. To the north, it is bounded by the Kang Rinpoche and Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains. This area has a less severe climate than the higher parts of Tibet. Because of this, most of the population of the Tibet Autonomous Region lives here. Near the capital of Lhasa, the river flows past sedimentary sandstone rocks. These rocks contain magnetic minerals. These grains record the alternating magnetic field current of the Earth.

One of the most famous features is the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. This canyon is formed by a horse-shoe bend in the river. This bend occurs where the river leaves the Tibetan Plateau. The river flows around the peak of Namcha Barwa. This canyon is the deepest in the world. It is also possibly the longest canyon on Earth.

The river is also known for its powerful waterfalls. There are three major waterfalls in its course. The largest is called the "Hidden Falls." Westerners did not publicize its existence until 1998. Some called this a discovery. However, Chinese geographers had already photographed the falls from a helicopter in 1987. Since the 1990s, the river has attracted whitewater kayakers. The river is known for extreme conditions. In 1993, a Japanese group attempted a run but lost a member. In 1998, a National Geographic expedition ended in tragedy when expert Doug Gordon died. In 2002, an international team successfully completed the first descent of the upper gorge.

Humans are now using the river for large energy projects. China is building the Medog Hydropower Station. This will be the largest hydropower dam in the world. Construction officially began on 19 July 2025. The project is expected to cost about 1 trillion yuan. This is roughly 127 billion US dollars. India and Bangladesh have expressed concerns about this project. They worry about the impact on their countries after the dam becomes operational after 2030.
