This earthquake caused the land to move. This movement switched the main river channel southward. This event opened the Jamuna channel in Bangladesh. 
In Bangladesh, the river system becomes even more complex. The Brahmaputra is joined by the Teesta River. Below this, the river splits into two main branches. The western branch is the Jamuna. It carries most of the water and flows south. The eastern branch is the Old Brahmaputra. 
The hydrology of the river is extremely powerful. The Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna system has the second-greatest discharge on Earth. The Brahmaputra alone provides about 50% of that total discharge. The river also carries a massive amount of sediment. Sediment is the sand, silt, and clay carried by water. The combined sediment load of this river system is 1.87 billion tonnes per year. This is the highest in the world. 
Climate plays a major role in how the river behaves. The river has two high-water seasons. The first season is in early summer due to melting snow. The second season is in late summer due to monsoon rains. Rising temperatures cause more snow to melt in the mountains. This increase in melting leads to higher water levels downstream. This can cause catastrophic flooding and erosion. The river is very important for the people living nearby. It is used for irrigation to grow crops. It is also a major route for transportation.
