The Padma acts as a border between India and Bangladesh. The city of Rajshahi sits on its banks.

Many people live near the water. They use the river to catch fish. This helps them make a living. However, the river can change the land. Since 1966, much land has been lost to erosion. Erosion is when water wears away the land.

Large bridges cross the water. The Hardinge Bridge is one such bridge.

There is also the Padma Bridge. It is the largest bridge in Bangladesh. It cost about 3 billion US dollars to build. The bridge opened on June 25, 2022. A dam called the Farakka Barrage changed how much water flows in the river. This has caused problems for fish and forests.

The river also acts as a natural border. It sits between India and Bangladesh. The Murshidabad District in India is on the western bank. The Rajshahi District in Bangladesh is on the other side.

Many people live near this moving water. They use the river to catch many kinds of fish. These fish help people earn money and find food. However, the river can be very strong. Since 1966, erosion has taken away a lot of land. More than 66,000 hectares of land have been lost. Erosion happens when the water wears away the river banks. This has been a hard job for people in the Jalangi area.

The name Padma has a very old meaning. In Sanskrit, the word means lotus flower.

Ancient Hindu scripts use this name for the Goddess Lakshmi. There is even a story about her in the Tripura Rahasya. Long ago, the river did not always flow in this exact path. An 18th-century geographer named James Rennell wrote about its old course. He noted the Ganges used to flow north of its present channel.

Large structures now cross over the wide water. The Hardinge Bridge is one way to cross.

The Padma Bridge is the largest bridge in Bangladesh. It cost about 3 billion US dollars to finish. The project faced many hard times and changes. In 2012, the World Bank stopped a $1.2 billion loan. The government of Bangladesh then hired a Chinese firm to build it.

A South Korean firm helped supervise the work. The bridge finally opened on June 25, 2022.

Changes to the water can affect the whole area. A dam called the Farakka Barrage was built on the Ganges. This reduced the amount of water flowing into the Padma. This change caused many problems for the land. Some fish species were lost because of the lower flow. Saltwater from the sea also moved further into the river.

It serves as the main eastern distributary of the Ganges River. A distributary is a branch of a river that flows away from the main channel. The Padma flows generally toward the southeast. It eventually reaches a confluence with the Meghna River. This meeting point occurs near the Bay of Bengal. The river is a vital part of the regional geography. It shapes the landscape and supports many different ecosystems.

The river plays a critical role in defining borders and locations. It flows between the Rajshahi District in Bangladesh and the Murshidabad District in West Bengal, India. This creates a natural river border between the two nations. The city of Rajshahi is situated directly on its banks.

The river's movement has significant physical effects on the surrounding land. Since 1966, river bank erosion has caused a major loss of territory. Over 66,000 hectares of land have been lost to this process. The Jalangi area in the Murshidabad District has been seriously affected by this erosion.

The name of the river carries deep historical and cultural meaning. In Sanskrit, the word Padma means lotus flower.

Ancient Hindu scripts use the name as a byname for the Goddess Lakshmi. There is also a narration regarding Lakshmi's connection to the river in the Tripura Rahasya. The river's path has also changed over many centuries. An eighteenth-century geographer named James Rennell studied these changes. He noted that the Ganges once had a former course north of its present channel.

Human activity has significantly altered the flow of the Padma. The construction of the Farakka Barrage on the Ganges River in West Bengal changed the water levels. This barrage reduced the maximum flows in the Padma River significantly. Such a reduction caused several environmental problems in Bangladesh. Some fish species were lost due to the lower water levels. The drying of the Padma's distributaries also occurred. Furthermore, saltwater intrusion from the Bay of Bengal increased. This process can also damage the mangrove forests of the Sundarbans.

Despite these challenges, the river remains essential for local livelihoods. The Padma is an important source of fisheries for many communities. People living along the banks depend on the water for food and income. Various types of boats use the river for transport.

The most significant structure is the Padma Bridge. This is the largest bridge in Bangladesh. It cost an estimated US$3 billion to complete. The project faced a difficult period in June 2012. The World Bank cancelled a $1.2 billion loan due to allegations of corruption. This made the future of the project uncertain for a time.

The Bangladesh government decided to proceed with the project without the loan. They hired a Chinese firm to construct the main part of the bridge. In October 2014, a South Korean firm was hired to supervise the construction. The project reached major milestones in the following years. The final span was installed on December 10, 2020. The last road slab was installed on August 24, 2021. The bridge was officially inaugurated on June 25, 2022.
