About 70 million years ago, two giant pieces of Earth's crust met. The Indo-Australian Plate moved north toward the Eurasian Plate. This movement closed the Tethys Ocean that used to be there. The land crumpled upward to form huge mountain ranges. The plateau is actually still rising today. It moves upward at a rate of about 5 millimeters every year.

Life on the plateau can be very tough.

Much of the land is a dry, high steppe. Some parts have grasslands that can support animals. In these areas, nomadic herdsmen live by raising livestock. They move around to find food for their herds. Other parts, like the Changtang, are much colder and drier. In those remote places, it is very hard for people to live.

Humans have been part of this landscape for a very long time.

Some evidence shows that people lived here 30,000 to 40,000 years ago. Later, a strong group called the Tibetan Empire grew here. This empire lasted from the 7th century to the 9th century AD. Today, many people still follow old traditions. For example, some large lakes are considered sacred sites.

About 70 million years ago, the Indo-Australian Plate began moving north. It moved at a rate of about 15 centimeters per year. This plate collided with the Eurasian Plate. This collision is known as an orogeny, or mountain-building event. Before this, the Tethys Ocean sat between the two landmasses. As the plates met, the ocean closed. The light sedimentary rocks from the ocean floor crumpled upward. This process formed the massive mountain ranges we see today.

Geological changes continued long after the initial collision.

During the Late Palaeogene, Tibet was a deep valley. It was not the flat, high land we see now. Isotopic records show the altitude was 3,000 metres around the Oligocene-Miocene boundary. The plateau's height changed significantly over millions of years. It fell by 900 metres between 25.5 and 21.6 million years ago. Later, it rose by 500 to 1,000 metres. Today, the Indo-Australian plate still pushes underneath the plateau. This forces the land to rise by about 5 millimetres every year.

The plateau is surrounded by many distinct mountain ranges.

To the south, the inner Himalayan range forms a border. To the north, the Kunlun Mountains separate the plateau from the Tarim Basin. The Qilian Mountains sit to the northeast. In the west, the rugged Karakoram range embraces the area. The landscape itself is mostly a high-altitude arid steppe. This means it is a dry, grassy plain. It is interspersed with mountain ranges and large brackish lakes.

Some animals, like the high-altitude jumping spider, live at elevations over 6,000 metres. Humans have also adapted to this harsh climate. Many people are pastoral nomads. They raise livestock on the grasslands instead of growing crops.

Evidence shows that Denisovans lived here long ago. Archaeological records suggest the earliest human occupation was 30,000 to 40,000 years ago. One famous civilization was the Tibetan Empire. It existed from the 7th century to the 9th century AD. Today, many people still follow nomadic traditions. Some large lakes, like Yamdrok Lake, are sacred pilgrimage sites.
