It is made up of five main areas. These are Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and the Tibet Autonomous Region. Some people define the region more narrowly. They might only include Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, and Guizhou. Others include parts of Guangxi or Hunan. This region is very important to the country. It sits between the high Tibetan Plateau and the coastal hills of the east.

The land here is very rugged and full of mountains. In the west, you will find the Hengduan Mountains. The northeast has the Sichuan Basin. To the east, there is the Yungui Plateau, which is a type of rocky landscape called karst. A huge river called the Yangtze flows through most of this area. In the northeast, this river creates the Three Gorges. The ground changes from high mountains to lower hills and plains as you move east.

History in this area goes back a very long time. The Qin dynasty emperor Shi Huangdi brought parts of this land into China in 230 BCE. Later, independent states like the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms held power here. In the 13th century, the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty expanded into the Tibetan Plateau. This area became a key spot during the Great Game in the 1800s. Later, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the city of Chongqing became a capital for resistance.

Many different kinds of people live in these diverse areas. In the early 21st century, half of China's ethnic minority groups lived here. These groups made up 37% of the total population in the southwest. You can find groups like the Zhuang, Miao, and Yi in the rural areas. Most people speak a dialect called Southwestern Mandarin. It uses the same writing as standard Chinese. However, it is only about 50% easy to understand for speakers of standard Chinese.

Today, the region is changing quickly due to new development. Since the late 1970s, many parts of the southwest have seen modern advancements. China has focused on trade to help the region grow. This helps to connect the southwest to the rest of the country. Large cities like Chongqing and Chengdu have millions of people. Chongqing is a very big urban center with over 8 million people. Chengdu is also huge, with more than 6 million people living in its urban area.

Southwestern China is a diverse region located within the People's Republic of China. The official government definition includes five main administrative regions. These are Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and the Tibet Autonomous Region. Some people use a narrower definition for the area. This version includes only Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, and Guizhou. Other definitions might include parts of Guangxi or western Hunan. This region serves as a massive geographic transition zone. It connects the high Tibetan Plateau in the west to the coastal hills and plains in the east.

The physical landscape of the southwest is extremely rugged and mountainous. In the western portion, the Hengduan Mountains define the terrain. Moving toward the northeast, the land forms the Sichuan Basin. The eastern part of the region features the Yungui Plateau. This plateau is characterized by karstic landscapes, which are formed by the dissolving of rocks. Water plays a major role in shaping this geography. The Yangtze River drains most of the region. In the northeast, this massive river creates the Three Gorges.

History in this region involves many different powers and shifts in control. The Qin dynasty emperor Shi Huangdi incorporated parts of the region into China in 230 BCE. This included land that is now known as Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan. However, independent states continued to exert influence for centuries. The Nanzhao Kingdom was a notable power during the 8th and 9th centuries CE. The Dali Kingdom also ruled during the 10th and 11th centuries CE. Later, the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty expanded into the Tibetan Plateau during the 13th century CE. This expansion helped define the current southwest frontier of China.

The region also became a site of international tension and conflict. During the 18th century, control of the Tibetan Plateau was a focus of the Great Game. This was a period of confrontation between the empires of Russia, Britain, and China. In the 20th century, the Second Sino-Japanese War changed the region again. The Nationalist government focused on state-building tasks in the southwest during this time. Chongqing served as the capital of Chinese resistance against imperial Japanese expansion. Following the Chinese Civil War, Nationalist forces retreated into Burma. This led to international pressure and several rounds of withdrawals between 1953 and 1960.

Demographics in the southwest reflect a very high level of ethnic diversity. In the early 21st century, the region held 50% of China's total ethnic minority population. These minority groups made up 37% of the total population in the southwest. Many different groups live in the rural areas, such as the Zhuang, Miao, and Yi. In contrast, Han Chinese migration has mostly concentrated in the urban centers. Most inhabitants speak a dialect called Southwestern Mandarin. This dialect uses the same written language as Standard Chinese. However, it is only about 50% mutually intelligible with the standard version. As of 2012, approximately 260 million people spoke this dialect.

Urbanization and industry have transformed the region in recent decades. In the first half of the 20th century, industrial development was led by the state. Since the late 1970s, rapid development has brought modern advancements to many areas. China has moved toward a socialist market economy to encourage growth. This transition included a focus on trade-led development. The government views economic engagement as a way to help the frontier. This strategy aims to decrease political unrest and remedy underdevelopment. By integrating the southwest, China seeks to turn a lagging region into a source of growth.

Several major cities in the southwest serve as massive population centers. Chongqing is one of the largest, with an urban area population of over 8.8 million people. Chengdu is another massive hub with over 6.3 million people in its urban area. Kunming is the capital of Yunnan and has over 3.1 million people in its urban area. Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou and has over 2.5 million people in its urban area. These cities represent the growing importance of the region within the national economy. They stand as examples of the rapid change occurring across the southwestern landscape.
