Many people call it the capital of Nauru. This is not strictly true because the country has no official capital cities. Still, the United Nations calls Yaren the main district. It is a very important place for the whole country. Most of the big government offices are located here.

Many important buildings sit within Yaren. You can find the Parliament House and the main administration offices here. There is also a police station and a fire station for safety. The Nauru International Airport is in this district too.

History tells us that Yaren was created in 1968. Before that, the area had a different name. It was known as Makwa or Moqua. This old name came from a place called Moqua Well.
