Yakisoba

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Yakisoba is a tasty noodle dish from Japan.

It uses wheat noodles. These are Chinese-style noodles. Chefs fry the noodles in a pan. They add small slices of pork. They also add vegetables. These include cabbage, onions, carrots, and bean sprouts. A special sauce gives it flavor. The sauce is like Worcestershire sauce.

You can add toppings to the dish. Many people use katsuobushi, which are thin fish flakes. They might add aonori, which is seaweed powder. Some people like red pickled ginger on top. You can even add mayonnaise.

Yakisoba started at street food stalls. These stalls are called yatai. In the past, noodles were cheaper than rice. This helped the dish become popular. People also eat yakisoba in a bun. This is called yakisoba-pan. You can find it in school canteens. In some places, people use udon noodles instead. This is called udon-yakisoba. It is a meal that people all over Japan love to eat.
