Xinjiang is a large area in northwest China. It is home to many different groups of people. The Uyghurs are a large ethnic group in this region. They are a Turkic group of people. The Han Chinese also live there in large numbers. There is a disagreement about who has the historical claim to this land. Uyghurs believe their ancestors lived there first. The Chinese government says the area has belonged to China since the Han Dynasty around 200 BC.

The history of this area includes many different conflicts. In the 1930s, wars broke out during a time of many leaders in China. A group called the First East Turkestan Republic was formed in 1933. It was destroyed in 1934. Later, a Second East Turkestan Republic was founded in 1944. This happened after the Ili Rebellion. Many Turkic rebels had ties to the Soviet Union. They even formed a committee in 1943 to fight against the Kuomintang rule. Since the People's Republic of China was formed, there have been more fights between the government and separatist groups.

Tensions grew due to many different things. From the 1950s to the 1970s, many Han Chinese people moved into the region. This is called mass migration. There were also attacks in the 1990s, like the 1997 Ürümqi bus bombings. Since the year 2000, there have been many more attacks. These include the 2009 Ürümqi riots and several attacks in 2014. In response, the Chinese government started the Strike Hard Campaign in 2014. This was meant to stop violent terrorism in the region.

In recent years, the situation has become much more serious. The Chinese government uses many tools to watch people. This includes facial recognition cameras and QR codes on apartment doors. Many reports say that over one million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities are held in camps. Some groups say these people are forced to do prison labor. Western observers have called this cultural genocide. In June 2020, 39 Western-aligned countries condemned how China treats the Uyghurs. However, 45 other nations wrote a letter to defend China's actions.

Life in Xinjiang can feel very different depending on who you are. For example, the Hui Muslim group has more religious freedom than the Uyghurs. Hui Muslims can often fast during Ramadan and go on the Hajj pilgrimage. In some parts of Xinjiang, like Turpan, rules were once more relaxed. But in other places, the rules are very strict. Many Uyghur women are discouraged from wearing veils. These different rules and the heavy use of technology make the region a place of great tension today.
