The X Window System is a special way for computers to show pictures.

People often call it X or X11. It helps computers run graphical user interfaces. This means it allows you to see windows, buttons, and menus. X is very important for many Unix-like operating systems. It works by letting different parts of a system talk to each other. This helps people use mice and keyboards to control programs.

X works using a client-server model. This can be a bit confusing at first. In this system, the X server is the part in front of the user. It manages the screen and the input devices like a mouse. The X clients are the actual programs you want to run. The server sends your mouse clicks to the client. Then, the client sends the picture back to the server to show on your screen.

This system was born from a project at MIT. This project was called Project Athena. It started all the way back in 1984. The way the parts talk has been called version 11 since September 1987. This is why many people call it X11. Today, a group called the X.Org Foundation leads the project. They provide the X.Org Server as free software for everyone to use.

One of the best things about X is network transparency. This means a program can run on a far-away computer.

You can still see that program on your own screen. The program sends its graphics over a network or the Internet. This is helpful for scientists running huge simulations on big computers. It is also useful for people managing machines from a distance. You can even use a secure tunnel to keep the connection safe.

Because X is a basic framework, it does not pick a specific look. It does not decide if a button is blue or round. Instead, other programs called window managers handle the style.

These can look like a standard desktop with icons. Others might look very simple or even very complex. This variety is why X is so flexible for different types of users.
