The X-Men are a famous team of superheroes from American comic books.

They belong to the Marvel Comics universe. These heroes are known as mutants. Mutants are humans born with a special trait called the X-gene. This gene gives them natural superhuman abilities. These powers usually appear when they reach puberty. Because they are different, many people treat mutants with prejudice. This means they face unfair treatment or discrimination. Many stories use these characters to talk about big ideas like justice and fairness.

Most X-Men stories follow a specific way of life. The team is usually led by Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X. He is a powerful telepath, which means he can read minds. He runs a school for mutant children in Westchester, New York. This large mansion is also the secret headquarters for the team.

The X-Men were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. They first appeared in the comic book titled The X-Men #1 in September 1963.

Stan Lee wanted to create a new group of heroes. He decided they should be mutants born with powers. He did not want to give every hero a different origin story. Jack Kirby wanted to show how to help people who are different. He thought a teacher like Professor X could help them develop their skills. This way, they could live together with everyone else.

Many important characters and events happened over the years. The original team included Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman, and Marvel Girl. Cyclops is a leader who shoots beams from his eyes. Magneto is a famous rival who can control magnetic fields. The series was even cancelled in 1970 because sales were low. However, it came back in 1975 with a new, international team.
