His father also loved literature very much. Even though his father was an artisan, he always studied books. This helped Wu develop a strong interest in writing from a young age.

Wu's life was not always easy or simple. He tried many times to pass the imperial examinations. These tests were needed to become a mandarin, or an official. He did not enter the imperial university in Nanjing until he was middle-aged. Eventually, he did become an official in places like Beijing. However, he did not enjoy his government work very much. He eventually resigned from his job to focus on writing.

He spent much of his later life as a hermit. He lived in his hometown and wrote many poems and stories. He used his writing to talk about the problems in the world. He wanted to show both magic and the real ways people act.

Journey to the West is his most famous work.

The novel was first published anonymously in 1592. This means no author's name was on it. At that time, many people thought stories were vulgar or not serious. Because of this, Wu likely chose to keep his name off the book. He also wrote in the vernacular tongue. This was the common way of speaking. Most other writers back then used a very formal style called Classical Chinese. Writing in the common way made his stories different from the trends of his time.

For over 300 years, many people did not know Wu wrote the book. People in his hometown thought he was the author, though. In the early 20th century, researchers began to look for the truth. A man named Hu Shih used old records to study the book. He found a local history book from 1625 that mentioned Wu. This book was called a gazetteer. It claimed Wu wrote something called Journey to the West. Even though some scholars still debate if he is the true author, he is still the most likely person.

Many experts believe he is the one who created it.

Wu Cheng'en wrote many other things besides his famous novel. He wrote a book called A Record of the Tripods of Emperor Yu. He also wrote many poems that showed his strong emotions. Some of his poems were even included in collections like A Digest of Ming Poetry. After he died, a family member gathered his writings into four volumes. These were called the Remaining Manuscripts of Mr. Sheyang. His writing was often described as stubborn or defiant. He used his talent to critique the corruption in society. His work remains a major part of history today.
