You can find them on skin or even on fabric. Many wrinkles happen as people age. This can be caused by sun damage or smoking.

Inside your skin, there are fibers called collagen and elastin. These fibers help your skin stay strong and stretchy. As we age, our bodies sometimes make mistakes when repairing these fibers. If a fiber breaks while the skin is stretched, it may be replaced by a long fiber. This makes the skin loose. If it breaks while the skin is squeezed, it may be replaced by a short fiber. These short fibers can make a permanent fold.

Some wrinkles come from how you sleep. Pressing your face against a pillow can create creases.

Some people use silk pillowcases to help. These smooth fabrics may reduce skin drag.

Water also causes wrinkles.

This is often called pruney fingers. It happens because your nerves tell your blood vessels to tighten. This reduces the fluid under your skin and causes folds. Some believe this helps us grip wet things better.
