Vitiligo is a condition that causes patches of skin to lose color. These patches can be light-peach in color. They can appear anywhere on the body. They often show up on the face, hands, and wrists.

Some people feel itching before a new patch appears. The spots might grow or change shape over time.

Doctors do not know the exact cause. Many think the immune system is responsible. The immune system is the body's way of fighting germs. In vitiligo, it may attack melanocytes. These are the tiny parts of the skin that make color. Other things might help cause it too. Stress or a sunburn can trigger it. Even rubbing the skin can cause it. This is called the Koebner phenomenon.

There is no cure, but there are ways to help. Doctors may use creams to help the skin. They also use light therapy. This uses special lamps to treat the skin. Some people use makeup to hide the spots. Others may choose to make their whole skin a lighter color.
