By the 7th century, Buddhists used woodblocks to make ritual items. These were often buried in holy ground. One very famous example is the Diamond Sutra. It was found in the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang. It was made on May 11, AD 868. It is the oldest printed text with a known date.

This method of printing spread to other lands very quickly. Evidence shows it appeared in Korea and Japan soon after China. In South Korea, the Great Dharani Sutra was found at Bulguksa. In Japan, Empress Shōtoku ordered one million copies of a sutra. These were kept in tiny wooden pagodas. By the year 1000, printing had spread across Eurasia. It even reached the Byzantine Empire. In Europe, printing on cloth became common by the year 1300.

In China, the Song dynasty saw a huge boom in printing. During this time, many people started building large private libraries. Before printing, collectors had a few thousand scrolls. After printing became common, some people owned over 100,000 juan. This means many more books were available for everyone to read. Printing also changed how books were made and held. People moved from long scrolls to books that could flip open. This made it much easier to find information quickly.

This method originated in ancient China, where it was first used to print designs on textiles. Later, the technology was adapted for use on paper. In a relief process, a craftsman carves a wooden block so that only specific lines and areas remain at the original surface level. These raised surfaces are then coated with ink. When paper or cloth is pressed against the block, the inked design is transferred to the material. While the carving process is incredibly skilled and laborious, a single block can produce a vast number of impressions.

The history of this technology is filled with both myth and archaeological evidence. In the 480s, a man named Gong Xuanyi claimed to possess a magical jade block. He told a local governor that a supernatural being gave him a device that required no brush. He claimed characters would form on paper just by blowing on it.

Some historians, like Timothy Hugh Barrett, suggest this "magical" block was actually an early printing device used to create an air of mysticism. However, physical evidence of printing exists even earlier. Woodblock flower patterns on silk have been found dating to the Han dynasty, before 220 AD. Other early inspirations likely included inscribed metal or stone seals and stone tablets used for copying classical texts in Luoyang.

Mahayana Buddhism played a vital role in the rapid advancement of printing. In this belief system, religious texts are viewed as sacred objects containing a Buddha's word. These texts are considered talismanic, meaning they possess power to ward off evil spirits. Buddhists believed that copying and preserving these texts allowed them to accrue personal merit. By the 7th century, woodblocks were being used to create apotropaic documents, which are items used for ritual protection. These were often buried in consecrated ground rather than distributed to the public.

One early example is a fragment of a dhāraṇī, or Buddhist spell, found in a tomb in Xi'an. It is known as the Great spell of unsullied pure light and dates to approximately 670 AD.

Archaeologists have discovered several landmark texts that define the timeline of woodblock printing. In 1907, Aurel Stein discovered a copy of the Diamond Sutra in the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang.

This 14-foot-long scroll is the world's oldest securely dated printed text. It contains a colophon stating it was made for universal free distribution by Wang Jie on May 11, AD 868. Following this, the earliest printed almanac, the Qianfu sinian lishu, was produced in 877. The technology also spread quickly to Korea and Japan. In South Korea, the Great Dharani Sutra was dated between 704 and 751 AD. In Japan, Empress Shōtoku ordered the production of one million copies of a sutra, known as the Hyakumantō Darani, which were stored in tiny wooden pagodas.

The Song dynasty marked a period of massive expansion for the printing industry. During this era, the technology moved from ritual use to widespread commercial and official use. The Directorate of Education used block prints to spread standardized versions of the Twelve Classics. Massive projects were also undertaken, such as the printing of the Tripiṭaka Buddhist Canon. This required 130,000 individual blocks and took ten years to complete, finishing in 983.

Printing also revolutionized how books were physically constructed. Instead of long, cumbersome scrolls, people began using concertina binding and butterfly binding. This allowed readers to flip to specific pages without unfolding an entire document. By the 11th century, central government offices were reportedly saving tenfold in costs by using printed versions instead of hand-written manuscripts.

This technological shift led to an explosion in the size of private libraries. Before printing became common, even wealthy collectors like Emperor Yuan of Liang held only about 80,000 juan, or rolls, of text. During the Song dynasty, the number of private collections tripled compared to all previous centuries combined. Some individuals owned massive libraries; for instance, Ye Mengde owned 6,000 titles totaling 100,000 juan.

Most of these collections were secular, containing encyclopedias, medical texts, and books on the art of war. This abundance of information helped students prepare for official examinations.

Despite its efficiency, woodblock printing did not immediately replace handwritten manuscripts. In Imperial China, elite scholars often viewed printed books with skepticism. Many connoisseurs believed that true scholars should prefer hand-copied works, viewing printed books as something for those who did not truly care for literature. However, the economic reality eventually shifted the balance. A Ming dynasty author noted that if a printed edition was available, a hand-copied version could no longer be sold. The massive cost difference—sometimes ten times higher for manuscripts—meant that printing eventually became the dominant method of sharing knowledge.
