This allows for much more flexibility than carving entire pages. Around 1040, Bi Sheng created the first known movable type system in China. He used porcelain, but these clay pieces broke easily. By 1298, Wang Zhen developed more durable wooden type. He even created a system of revolving tables to make typesetting more efficient.

Metal movable type brought even more durability to the process. In the 12th century, copper movable type printing began in China. This was used to print large amounts of paper money for the Northern Song dynasty.

Later, the Goryeo dynasty in Korea developed metal type using bronze. In 1377, Koreans printed the Jikji, which is the earliest known book printed with movable metal type. This Korean method was extremely similar to the later European systems.

The speed of printing increased dramatically during the Industrial Revolution. In 1843, Richard M. Hoe invented the steam-powered rotary printing press in the United States. This machine used impressions curved around a cylinder. This allowed it to print on long, continuous rolls of paper. Hoe's original design could perform 2,000 revolutions per hour. This gave the press a throughput of 8,000 pages per hour. By 1891, some presses could produce 90,000 four-page sheets every single hour.
