Preparing the fabric is a multi-step process that must happen before any color is applied. First, the cloth is washed and bleached to ensure it is clean. It must then be brushed to remove any dust or loose fibers. In some cases, the cloth is sheared using rapidly revolving knives to make the surface perfectly smooth. This smoothness is vital for capturing the most delicate engraved details. Finally, some fabrics are stretched on a device called a stenter before being wound into rolls for the machines.
