Textile manufacturing is a huge industry that makes many things we use. It is the way we turn tiny fibers into long yarn. Then, that yarn is turned into fabric or cloth. This cloth becomes clothes, blankets, and even things for cars. Cotton is the most common natural fiber used today. It actually makes up 90% of all natural fibers in the industry. People love wearing cotton because it feels very comfortable. 
Making cotton cloth follows a very specific set of steps. First, cotton is grown in hot and sunny places. Farmers harvest the cotton bolls, which are the seed pods. 

People have been making textiles for a very long time. Ancient civilizations in places like China, Egypt, and India all made them. 
There are many interesting numbers in the world of cotton. In 2007, the world grew 25 million tons of cotton. This came from 35 million hectares of land in over 50 countries.

Textile manufacturing, also known as textile engineering, is a massive global industry. It involves the systematic conversion of raw fibers into yarn. This yarn is then transformed into fabric through various methods. Once fabric is created, it can be dyed or printed. It is then fabricated into useful goods like clothing, upholstery, and industrial products.
Cotton is the most important natural fiber in this process. It accounts for 90% of all natural fibers used in the industry. In 2007, the global cotton yield reached 25 million tons. This was grown on 35 million hectares across more than 50 countries. Different varieties of cotton offer different benefits. American cotton, or Gossypium hirsutum, produces a long staple. This length is necessary for mechanized production. In contrast, Indian cotton, or Gossypium arboreum, is finer but only suitable for hand processing.
The manufacturing of cotton textiles follows six distinct stages. These stages are cultivating and harvesting, preparatory processes, spinning, weaving or knitting, finishing, and marketing. It begins in hot, dry locations with plenty of sunshine. Farmers harvest the cotton bolls, which are the seed pods of the plant. These bolls contain thousands of seeds, each attached to fibers about 2.5 cm long. Stripper harvesters and spindle pickers remove the entire boll from the plant. 
After harvesting, the seed cotton undergoes ginning to separate the seeds. In a saw gin, circular saws pull the fiber through a narrow grating. This grating is too small for the seeds to pass through. A roller gin is used for longer-staple cotton. A leather roller captures the cotton while a knife blade detaches the seeds. The resulting cleaned fiber is called lint. This lint is compressed into bales that are 1.5 m tall and weigh nearly 220 kg. Only 33% of the original crop becomes usable lint. 
Preparatory processes involve cleaning and organizing the fibers. First, an opener uses large spikes to break open 500-pound bales. A picker machine then beats the cotton with a bar to loosen it. This is followed by scutching, which removes remaining seeds and impurities. Scutching machines use fast-moving beater bars to knock seeds out. Next, carding machines use rollers covered in small teeth to align the fibers. This process creates a thick rope of fibers called a sliver. 

Spinning turns the sliver into yarn. Modern factories often use open-end spinning. In this method, air blows fibers into a rotating drum. The fibers attach to the tail of a growing yarn. Other methods include mule and ring spinning. Mule spinning is an intermittent process that produces a soft, fine thread. Ring spinning is a continuous process that produces a stronger, coarser thread. This stronger thread is ideal for warp threads. To improve quality, yarn may undergo gassing. This involves passing yarn through gas flames to burn off projecting fibers. 
Weaving is the final step in creating fabric using a loom. The loom uses two sets of threads. The lengthwise threads are called the warp. The crosswise threads are called the weft. The warp threads are wound onto a warp beam. The weft is carried across the loom in a shuttle. Before weaving, the warp is often treated with starch in a sizing machine. This strengthens the threads to prevent breakage during the process. 
Textile production has a long and evolving history. Ancient civilizations in India, Egypt, and China all practiced forms of textile production. For centuries, textile making was a household craft. The industry changed during the 18th and 19th centuries when it became mechanized. John Murphy wrote the first book on the subject, titled 'A Treatise on the Art of Weaving.' Today, technology allows a single worker to manage many machines. In 1925, a skilled weaver could operate six Lancashire Looms.
