However, he later chose to work in politics instead of the church.

Stoughton became a very skilled politician in the new colonies. He worked closely with his friend and partner, Joseph Dudley.

The two men worked together to buy large amounts of land. They even helped settle a group of people called Huguenots in Oxford. Stoughton used his high position to help clear land titles for himself. This helped his friends and business partners too. He served on many different government councils for many years. He was also a major landowner in the province.

One of the most famous parts of his life was in 1692.

At that time, people in Salem were talking about witchcraft. Governor William Phips appointed Stoughton to lead a special court. Stoughton became the chief justice of the colonial courts. He was a judge during the Salem Witch Trials. He was known for being very harsh during these trials. He even asked juries to change their minds about people.

During these trials, Stoughton allowed something called spectral evidence. This was a way to use visions of spirits as proof. Some judges thought this was a bad idea for a court. Stoughton believed it was acceptable to use these visions. Later, the Governor told courts to stop using this kind of evidence. Because of this change, many cases were dismissed. Stoughton was angry about this and briefly left his job. Unlike some other judges, he never said he was wrong.

Stoughton also helped lead the colony as an acting governor. He did this for about six years after Governor Phips left. During this time, there was a war with New France. Stoughton had to help protect frontier towns from raids. He also tried to organize raids against groups in Acadia. He worked to protect the fishing and merchant fleets. Even though he was a busy leader, his name is still remembered today. The town of Stoughton, Massachusetts, was named after him.
