His father, Adam, was a lawyer and a successful merchant. Because of this, John grew up with many opportunities. He studied at Trinity College and learned about the law. He also learned a lot about religion from his father. These lessons helped him become a leader later in life.

Winthrop lived through a very difficult time in England. King Charles I was in charge of the country. The King was not very kind to the Puritans. Puritans were a religious group with their own ideas. The King began to treat these people unfairly.

This made many Puritans want to find a new home. They looked toward the New World for safety. They wanted a place where they could practice their faith freely. This led to the start of the Massachusetts Bay Company.

In April 1630, Winthrop led a huge group of people on a voyage. They sailed across the ocean to reach New England.

They settled near the Massachusetts Bay and the Charles River. Winthrop helped build many different communities on the shore. He served as the governor for twelve of the first twenty years. He actually served 18 different terms as a leader. He wanted the colony to be a "city upon a hill." This meant he wanted it to be a shining example for the world.

Winthrop was a very strong and serious leader. He had many different ideas about how to run a government. He did not believe in unconstrained democracy. He thought that only certain people should have the right to vote.

He often argued with other leaders in the colony. Some leaders were more liberal than he was. Others were even more conservative than he was. He even clashed with people named Thomas Dudley and Roger Williams. He wanted to keep order in the new land.

Winthrop's influence lasted for a very long time. His son, John Winthrop the Younger, became a leader too. His son helped to found the Connecticut Colony.
