He also became a leader in the city of Boston. He worked closely with a man named Samuel Adams. Some people thought Adams was the real leader. Others believed Hancock was a strong leader on his own. They worked together to help the colonists. This partnership helped Hancock grow in politics.

Things became difficult when Great Britain began to tax the colonies. The British Parliament passed laws like the Sugar Act in 1764. These laws were meant to raise money for Britain. Many colonists felt these taxes were very unfair. They believed they should not be taxed without their consent. Hancock began to join the protest against these rules. He helped organize boycotts of British goods. This made him very popular in Massachusetts.

British officials often targeted Hancock because he was a leader.

He showed great courage during these hard times.

John Hancock held many important jobs in the new nation. He was the first and third governor of Massachusetts. He also served as a president for the Continental Congress.
