He is most famous for portraying the character Ken Barlow in the long-running ITV soap opera, Coronation Street. Since the show's first broadcast on 9 December 1960, Roache has appeared in the series continuously. This remarkable consistency earned him a place in the Guinness World Records. He is recognized as the world's longest-serving television star in a continuous role. This record was established after the 2010 cancellation of the American soap opera, As the World Turns, which featured actor Don Hastings.

Roache's early life was shaped by his family background in Nottingham and Derbyshire. He was born in the Basford suburb of Nottingham to Joseph William Vincent Roache, a doctor, and Hester Vera Waddicor. His maternal grandfather, Albert, was a man known for being a violent drunk. His grandmother, Mary Zillah Waddicor, was a successful businesswoman. She managed a restaurant and tea rooms at Alton Towers during its time as a tourist attraction. Roache attended a Steiner school in Ilkeston, which was established by his grandfather in a family garden. He later received his education at Rydal School.

Before entering the world of acting, Roache served in the British Army. In 1953, he was commissioned into the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He rose through the ranks, becoming a lieutenant in 1954 and eventually reaching the rank of captain by 1956. During his military service, an exploding mortar round caused him to suffer from tinnitus, a condition involving ringing in the ears. After leaving the military, he began a career in stage productions and film. He held uncredited roles in movies like The Bulldog Breed, where he played a space centre operator. He also appeared in television serials such as Knight Errant Limited and Skyport.

His breakthrough came through a connection with the creator of Coronation Street, Tony Warren. Before joining the soap opera, Roache played the lead in a Granada Television play titled Marking Time, which aired in 1961. Warren saw this performance and decided Roache was the ideal actor for the role of Ken Barlow. This decision launched a career that has spanned decades and thousands of episodes. By 1985, just before the show's 25th anniversary, his impact was recognized by the television show This Is Your Life. He has since appeared in over 4,833 episodes of the series.

Throughout his career, Roache has received numerous prestigious honors and awards. In 1999, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Soap Awards. The University of Chester granted him an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters in 2007 for his contributions to television. He was also recognized in the British honors system. In 2001, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). In 2022, he was promoted to Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his work in drama and charity.

Roache has also explored various personal interests and faced significant legal challenges. He is a published author, having written autobiographies like Ken and Me and Soul on the Street. His writing often touches on his philosophical beliefs and his interest in astrology. In 2013, he faced serious legal allegations involving sexual offenses. He was charged with several counts of rape and indecent assault. However, during his trial at Preston Crown Court in 2014, he was found not guilty on all charges. Following his acquittal, he returned to filming Coronation Street in June 2014.

Beyond his professional life, Roache's personal history is complex. He was married to Anna Cropper, with whom he had two children, Linus and Vanya. His son, Linus Roache, also became a professional actor. He later married Sara McEwan Mottram, but she passed away suddenly in 2009. Roache has also been active in political discussions, supporting the Conservative Party. This stance differs from his character Ken Barlow, who is often viewed as a Labour supporter. His life remains a significant part of British cultural history through his continuous presence on screen.
