He was born on 13 July 1940, to Gladys and Alfred Stewart. His childhood was marked by a difficult home life. His father, a regimental sergeant major in the British Army Parachute Regiment, suffered from combat fatigue, now known as PTSD. This condition led to domestic violence in the household. Stewart later noted how his father's powerful presence influenced his later acting work. He credited his English teacher, Cecil Dormand, for sparking his interest in performance. Dormand gave him a copy of Shakespeare and encouraged him to perform.

Before becoming a professional actor, Stewart worked several jobs to support his studies. He worked as a newspaper reporter and an obituary writer. He eventually left journalism after his employer gave him an ultimatum. To balance work and theater rehearsals, he took a job in a furniture store. He used his acting skills to improve his sales pitches to customers. He also trained in boxing during this period. Eventually, he received a grant to attend the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. This was a significant achievement as he was the first non-Oxford or Cambridge graduate to receive such a grant from the West Riding Council.

His early professional career was rooted in classical theater.

He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 and remained until 1982. During this time, he performed alongside notable actors like Ben Kingsley. He made his Broadway debut in 1971 in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. In 1979, he won his first Olivier Award for his role in Antony and Cleopatra. He later won a second Olivier Award in 2008 for playing King Claudius in Hamlet. These roles in classical drama provided the foundation for his later success.

Stewart achieved international stardom through the science fiction franchise Star Trek.

He was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987. At the time, he was considered an unknown British Shakespearean actor. He was initially skeptical of the show's success and lived out of a suitcase. He even found the technical dialogue, or "technobabble," difficult to memorize. However, the series became a massive success and changed his life. He later remarked that his years playing kings and heroes prepared him for the captain's chair. He reprised the role in several films and the series Star Trek: Picard.

Beyond Star Trek, Stewart has become a recognizable figure in major film franchises.

He portrayed Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series from 2000 to 2017. He has also contributed his voice to many animated films. These include The Prince of Egypt, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, and Chicken Little. His versatility allows him to move between serious drama and comedy. For example, he received Emmy nominations for his comedic work in the sitcoms Frasier and Extras. He continues to appear in various film and television projects today.

Stewart's career demonstrates the connection between classical training and popular media. He has bridged the gap between the Royal Shakespeare Company and Hollywood blockbusters. His dedication to preparation set a high standard for his colleagues. Cast members noted that he always arrived with his lines fully memorized and scripts analyzed. This professionalism helped elevate the quality of the productions he joined. His journey from a small town in Yorkshire to global fame is a testament to his skill and persistence.
