He is widely regarded as a British cultural icon. His career spans many different genres of storytelling. He performs in Shakespearean dramas and modern theatre. He also stars in popular fantasy and science fiction films. Because of his massive contributions to the arts, Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in 1991. This honor recognizes his excellence in his craft.

McKellen's journey into acting began with a deep fascination for the stage. When he was three, his parents took him to see Peter Pan at the Manchester Opera House. At age nine, he received a Victorian toy theatre for Christmas. This toy was made of wood and bakelite. It featured cardboard scenery and wires to move small figures. He also attended Shakespeare plays with his sister, Jean.

These early experiences shaped his future path.

His formal training and early professional steps were very deliberate. He won a scholarship to the University of Cambridge in 1958. There, he studied English literature at St Catharine's College. While at Cambridge, he was a member of the Marlowe Society. He performed in 23 plays over three years during his time there. He made his professional debut in 1961 at the Belgrade Theatre.

He later joined the Prospect Theatre Company in 1969.

McKellen became a leading figure in major British theatre companies. In the 1970s, he was a stalwart of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He also worked extensively with the National Theatre of Great Britain. He earned five Laurence Olivier Awards for his stage roles. These roles included characters in Pillars of the Community, The Alchemist, and Bent.

Beyond his acting, McKellen is a significant figure in social activism. He came out as gay in 1988. Since then, he has championed LGBT social movements across the world. He is a cofounder of Stonewall, a rights lobby group in the United Kingdom. This group takes its name from the Stonewall riots.

His life has been shaped by both his heritage and his personal resilience. He was born in Burnley, Lancashire, on 25 May 1939. His father was a civil engineer and a lay preacher. Growing up during the Second World War had a lasting impact on him. He noted that he only realized war was not normal after peace returned.
