Acting is the art of portraying different people through movement, voice, and emotion. Kingsley began his professional journey in the theater. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1967. He spent the next 15 years focusing almost entirely on stage productions. His early roles included classics like Hamlet and The Tempest. He also performed in Much Ado About Nothing and Richard III. In 1971, he made his Broadway debut in A Midsummer Night's Dream. He worked alongside other famous actors like Patrick Stewart. This period built the foundation for his later success in film.

Kingsley's personal history is a blend of diverse cultural backgrounds. He was born Krishna Pandit Bhanji on December 31, 1943, in Snainton, Yorkshire. His mother, Anna, was an English actress and model. His father, Rahimtulla, was born in Zanzibar to a family from Jamnagar, India. This family was of Khoja Gujarati descent. Kingsley grew up in Pendlebury, Lancashire. He attended Manchester Grammar School and later De La Salle College. Although his father practiced Isma'ili Shia Islam, Kingsley is a Quaker. He has also noted possible Russian-Jewish heritage from his mother's side.

Early in his career, Kingsley made a significant decision regarding his identity. In the 1960s, he changed his name to Ben Kingsley. He believed a foreign name might make it harder to find work. He explained that once he changed his name, he began getting more auditions. This practical choice helped him transition from stage to screen. Before committing to acting, he was even offered a chance to be a pop star. He declined the offer from producer Dick James to pursue the craft of acting instead. This choice defined his professional path.

His transition to major film roles reached a turning point in 1982. He starred as Mahatma Gandhi in the film Gandhi, directed by Richard Attenborough.

His portrayal of the peacemaker was a massive success. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for this role. Critics noted that his performance felt powerful yet quiet and observant. Following this, he took on many complex roles in historical dramas. In 1993, he played Itzhak Stern in the film Schindler's List. This performance earned him a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
